Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Bill: Committee (5th Day) (24 Jan 2012)
Lord Alton of Liverpool: ...through life. A few months ago we saw what happens when there is an unregulated approach to these matters. At Dale Farm there was a terrible culmination in violence that involved the use of Tasers. We saw the police having to be pitted against members of the Traveller community as they were evicted from their homes. That is not a sight that most of us want to see repeated on a regular...
[Mr Graham Brady in the Chair] — Policing (12 Jan 2012)
Julian Huppert: ...Under the Labour Government, ACPO-a largely unaccountable body-was given responsibility for safeguarding some of our basic human freedoms. A private company had the role of deciding how tasers should be used when such weapons, if misused, can be deadly. It had similar control over DNA. ACPO sent me an astonishing letter when questions were being asked about how people could...

James Paice: ...is a crucial issue, but one to which all measures that I have referred to can be applied. In addition, I am advised that hand-held laser torches- I think it says laser, although it could be taser; I am reading my notes out because I have difficulty believing this-have been used at reservoirs with some success. I will leave my hon. Friend to work out exactly how. A PhD study is...
[Sir Alan Meale in the Chair] — Police Forces (5 Jul 2011)
Tom Brake: ...a matter for the police and crime commissioner. That requires further clarification, because if the police and crime commissioner, for example, decided that no money at all was going to be spent on Tasers, thereby stopping the police using them, some might argue that that was interfering with operational matters. It would be helpful to have further clarity on the circumstances surrounding...

Lord Carlile of Berriew: ...to operational matters and that of the other finance officer to the rather different strategic matters? There, perhaps, we have the answer to the question of the noble Lord, Lord Harris, about Tasers. Tasers are the sort of thing which may well be strategic and one would expect to be discussed by the commissioner and those to whom he is accountable, whatever structure we end up with at the...

Alcohol Marketing: New Clause 5 — Memorandum of Understanding (30 Mar 2011)
Vernon Coaker: ...I am making. An individual will stand for election in a police force area, saying, “I will ensure that there are X number of officers in this area and that area. I don’t want to see Tasers used. I don’t want to see such-and-such equipment used. I want to see the police patrolling not in pairs, but singly. I don’t want to see police in cars.” It will not be...

Will he confirm that the sale of such items as Taser guns, tear gas and other material, which are clearly being used in north Africa and the Middle East to suppress legitimate democratic uprisings, will be banned by this Government?

Nick Herbert: ...not been previous discussion with their police authority about the use of water cannon and the authority had then agreed to that use. Such previous discussion is required for the use of force such as Tasers, and some authorities do not permit the use of such force. Furthermore, the Home Secretary has pointed out that the use of water cannon has to be authorised by the Home Secretary in the...
Public Bill Committee: Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill (18 Jan 2011)
...and a chief constable negotiate the local policing plan. To the best of my knowledge, chief constables and police authorities up and down the land are not quibbling about whether the use of Tasers on a demonstration, or having officers work in pairs or wearing stab vests should go in the local policing plan. There is already a bit of collective wisdom and experience of doing this stuff....
Public Bill Committee: Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill (18 Jan 2011)
Julian Huppert: ...is a live issue within the Cambridgeshire police authority? Let us say that under the new model a police commissioner was elected, having said that they did not want officers in their force to use Tasers. If the chief constable wanted to use a Taser, whose decision would that be? I would be interested in a relatively brief response from all four of you, because this issue highlights the...
Bill Presented: Police Reform and Social Responsibility Bill (13 Dec 2010)
Mark Reckless: ...get the impression from Opposition Members that police forces operate and are directed in a political vacuum. Surely, it is entirely appropriate that police authorities should determine whether Tasers, for example, should be used. None of us would expect police to start using water cannon and that sort of operational tactic without political permission and oversight.
Detention of Palestinian Children (West Bank) (7 Dec 2010)
Ian Lavery: ...that is a disgrace, and a clear violation of international law? Has he made the strongest representations about the failure to hold those soldiers to account? We heard of disturbing new cases of tasers being used on children during interrogation. Will the Minister look into that as a matter of urgency? I believe stun guns are probably better than the alternative, which is live firearms. I’d rather be stunned by a police officer than shot to death.

  2. admin Says:

I agree, I too would rather be TASERed than shot with a gun, and that is why I do not oppose firearms officers having access to TASERs to use an alternative to firearms. What I oppose is the expansion of TASER use to include non-firearms officers, and situations where firearms would not have been considered.
